Great Romances

A Series of Unfortunate Events

Probably the wedding with the greatest number of ill omens was that of Amadeo, the Duke D’Aosta of Italy, to Princess Maria del Pozzo della Cisterno in 1867. It is hard to imagine a longer list of catastrophes.

Amadeus

The ill-starred couple

The wardrobe mistress hanged herself and, for some unknown reason, the palace gatekeeper cut his own throat (no small feat in itself). Then the colonel leading the wedding procession collapsed from heat exhaustion and the king’s aide fell from his horse and died from his wounds.

After the wedding, a stationmaster was crushed to death under the wheels of the honeymoon train. And, presumably in despair at all these goings on, the best man shot himself. It sounds as though suicide was all the rage in Italy at the time.

You would think that all this might augur badly for the future of the couple and so it proved. The Princess soon found that her new husband had an eye for the ladies and little idea of fidelity; her complaints to the king were ignored, it being suggested that the behavior of the Prince was no business of hers.

In 1870, Amadeo was elected king of Spain, only to find himself without popular support and unable to prevent uprisings by various political factions. He abdicated in 1873 and went back to Italy. Poor Maria della Cisterna died in 1876, perhaps worn out by the Prince’s turbulent lifestyle.

Dream Number Leads to Future Wife

Dream dates do exist! At least they do for David Brown, a 24 year old British man who dreamed about a cell phone number. David thought it might have been the number of someone he met the night before so he texted it. Thus began a romantic tale.

Text

The number actually belonged to Michelle Kitson, a 17 year old girl he had never met. But the two hit it off - texting led to phone calls and letters and eventually David moved 60 miles to be nearer his dream lover.

Their story is an example of a true romantic dream. Michelle and David have just returned from their honeymoon.

Couple Celebrates 80 Years Together

In a world where nearly half of all marriages end in divorce, a story about a couple in Maine who are celebrating their 80th wedding anniversary is rare enough to make news.

Couple

Kathleen and Waldo Tarbell were married on April 9, 1927 in Calais, Maine. Waldo worked for the railroad and Kathleen worked in a factory, packing sardines. Waldo made 37 cents an hour and Kathleen got 25 cents for every 100-can case of sardines she packed. Life wasn’t easy, but together they managed to raise two kids and stay together.

Today they have multiple grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. Family members and friends across the generations will attend the party that will be held in the couple’s large room at the Oceanview Nursing Home.

Schuss, We’re Getting Married

Ever since the sixties, there have been couples who have entered into wedlock in strange settings. Sky diving, underwater, Las Vegas, Portmeirion (where the BBC filmed The Prisoner series), you name it, it’s been done.

Or has it? Matt Dodd and Ashley Hegseth tied the knot at Big Sky Resort, Montana. Nothing unusual about that, except that Matt was skiing and Ashley snowboarding as the minister, Rev. Mike Boucher, schussed backwards in front of them and took them through their vows. Since everything went off okay, one must presume that there were no accidents involving trees or unexpected precipices to interrupt the ceremony.

Of course, we all know that marriage can be a bit of a slalom ride at times, so it may be a fitting place to start. One hopes that it’s not all downhill from there, however…
